Romantic Things to Do in Venice: The Ultimate Guide for Couples

(1)

Many people think of Paris as Europe’s most romantic city. But after more than ten years of traveling to Venice as a couple, I honestly believe Venice deserves that title just as much.

There is simply nowhere else quite like it. No cars. No traffic. Just canals, centuries-old palaces, quiet little squares and sunsets reflected on the water. Whether you’re planning a romantic weekend, a honeymoon or even a proposal, Venice has a unique atmosphere that’s hard to find anywhere else.

Over the years, I’ve discovered some of the city’s most romantic places, experiences, hotels and restaurants.
In this guide, I’ll share all my favorite recommendations to help you plan an unforgettable trip to Venice as a couple.

Venice Most Romantic Places

The whole of Venice feels romantic. Canals, bridges, colorful palaces and quiet streets create an atmosphere unlike anywhere else.
Still, some places are even more special than others. Here are my favorite spots for a romantic walk or a memorable moment together:

  • Sunset on the Grand Canal: As the sun begins to set, the light reflects on the Grand Canal and the historic façades, creating one of the most beautiful scenes in the city. One of my favorite ways to enjoy the moment is to stop for a drink at one of the bars overlooking the canal near the Rialto Bridge.

💡 My tip: The view here is fantastic, but I wouldn’t recommend having dinner right next to the bridge. Most restaurants in this area are quite touristy and the food rarely matches the location. Instead, enjoy a drink with the view and head elsewhere for dinner.

  • The View from Accademia Bridge: Less crowded than Rialto, the Accademia Bridge offers one of the most iconic panoramas in Venice. From here, you’ll enjoy a stunning view over the Grand Canal with the magnificent dome of Santa Maria della Salute in the background.

It’s the perfect place to pause, take a few photos and simply admire the city together.

  • Punta della Dogana: Once the city’s customs point for arriving ships, it’s now a peaceful spot overlooking the lagoon, St. Mark’s Basin and the Campanile rising above the skyline.

It’s especially beautiful at the end of the day, when the light becomes softer and the crowds begin to disappear.

  • St. Mark’s Square at Sunrise: For a short moment, the square belongs almost entirely to the people who made the effort to get out of bed before everyone else. It’s peaceful, quiet and incredibly photogenic. You’ll often see couples having engagement or wedding photos taken here — proof that many people consider it one of the most romantic places in the city.

💡 While you’re here, don’t miss the Bridge of Sighs. Early morning is the best time to admire it from Ponte della Paglia, before the crowds arrive.

  • Santa Maria dei Miracoli: One of Venice’s most charming churches. It’s also one of the city’s most romantic! Many Venetian couples choose to get married here, and it’s easy to understand why. Built entirely of colorful marble, both inside and out, it looks completely different from Venice’s other churches and has a wonderfully intimate atmosphere.

The Best Romantic Things to Do in Venice for Couples

Many travel guides describe almost every activity in Venice as “romantic.” And while Venice is undoubtedly one of the most romantic cities in Europe, not every experience feels magical once you add the crowds.

These are the experiences I genuinely recommend for couples. As always in Venice, choosing the right time of day makes all the difference.

          • Arrive in Venice by Boat

If you’re flying into Venice, skip the bus and arrive by water instead.

To have the chance to arrive in Venice by boat as soon as you leave the airport, head to the shuttle and water taxi pier. Whether you choose a shared water shuttle or a private water taxi, watching Venice appear across the lagoon is one of the most memorable ways to start a romantic trip.

A shared water shuttle… after all the other passengers have already been dropped off.

          • Visit St. Mark’s Basilica or the Doge’s Palace After Hours

One of the most exclusive experiences in Venice.

A few evening tours allow you to visit the city’s two most famous monuments after closing time, when they’re almost empty. It’s a unique way to experience Venice away from the crowds.

          • Climb St. Mark’s Campanile Before Sunset

The views are spectacular at any time of day, but late afternoon is my favorite.

The crowds are usually smaller, the light is softer and, if you’re lucky, you’ll even catch the sunset over Venice and the lagoon.

          • Take a romantic Gondola Ride at Night

Much quieter than during the day, Venice becomes incredibly peaceful after dark.

The reflections on the canals, the silence and the softly lit palaces create a truly unforgettable atmosphere.
As a little bonus, many gondola rides pass beneath the famous Bridge of Sighs, where legend says a kiss will bring eternal love.

          • Ride the Vaporetto Along the Grand Canal

One of the simplest — and surprisingly most romantic — experiences in Venice.

Vaporettos are Venice’s public water buses. They are not only the city’s main form of public transport but also one of the best ways to admire the beauty of the Grand Canal.

Skip the busy daytime boats and hop on after sunset, when the Grand Canal becomes quieter and beautifully illuminated.

          • Enjoy a Private Walking Tour

A private guide allows you to escape the busiest streets and discover hidden corners of Venice together.

It’s a wonderful way to combine romance with fascinating local history.

          • Have Dinner by a Canal

Nothing beats a candlelit dinner beside a quiet canal.

You’ll find my favorite romantic restaurants a little further down in this guide.

          • Take a romantic boat ride on the Lagoon

A wonderful way to experience the beauty of Venice from the water. As you cruise through the lagoon, you’ll discover peaceful corners that many visitors never see. And if you’re lucky enough to enjoy the sunset, it’s likely to become one of your favorite memories of Venice.

          • Enjoy an Aperitivo with a View

For one of the best sunset aperitivos in Venice, head to the Riva degli Schiavoni. This long waterfront promenade offers beautiful views over the lagoon, especially on a clear evening.

Then walk towards the Biennale Gardens and stop at “Ristorante in Paradiso” for a Spritz or a glass of chilled Prosecco. It’s one of my favorite places to end the day in Venice.

          • Book a Couple’s Photo Shoot

If you’re celebrating a honeymoon, anniversary or proposal, a professional photo session is a wonderful way to bring home lasting memories of Venice.  ⟶ Check availability

Romantic Things to Do in Venice at Night

An evening walk through St. Mark’s Square.

Venice becomes even more magical after sunset. As the day-trippers leave, the crowds thin out and the city feels quieter, more peaceful and incredibly romantic.

Here are a few of my favorite ways to spend an evening in Venice:

Stroll Through St. Mark’s Square

St. Mark’s Square has a completely different atmosphere at night. The illuminated monuments are stunning, and live orchestras often play outside Caffè Florian and Gran Caffè Quadri. You might even spot a few couples dancing beneath the arcades.

Ride the Vaporetto Along the Grand Canal

At night, the Grand Canal takes on a whole new atmosphere. The illuminated palaces and their reflections on the water make this one of the most beautiful boat rides in Venice.

Take a Night Gondola Ride

Quieter canals, fewer boats and a wonderfully peaceful atmosphere. If you’re looking for the most romantic gondola experience, this is the time to go.

Attend a Classical Music Concert

Venice is the birthplace of Antonio Vivaldi, so attending a classical concert is a wonderful way to spend an evening. One of my favorites is The Four Seasons, performed in some of the city’s historic churches.

Spend an Evening on the Lagoon

From sunset catamaran cruises to romantic dinners aboard a Venetian galleon, there are plenty of ways to enjoy Venice from the water after dark.

My Tips for Planning a Romantic Trip to Venice

In Venice, the most romantic moments are often the simplest ones. Watching the Grand Canal from a quiet vaporetto, sharing a plate of fresh pasta in a hidden restaurant or simply wandering through peaceful streets together often creates the best memories.

Don’t try to fill every minute of your itinerary.
Of course, Venice’s famous landmarks are worth visiting, but leave some time to get lost, stop for a coffee in a quiet square or enjoy a Spritz by a canal.

Make the most of the early mornings and evenings.
These are by far the most magical times of day. Venice is quieter, the light is beautiful and the atmosphere feels completely different.

Book special experiences in advance.
Gondola rides, romantic hotels, sunset cruises and exclusive tours often sell out, especially during the high season. If you’re planning a surprise or celebrating a special occasion, don’t leave anything to chance.
